Robert W's Story
Time flies when your career path takes you to many places in the world but when your life is measured by where you've been and where your going, what does it mean? This time in 1972 I had no clue as to where I would be in 2002 much less 2012. I know where I want to be in 2013 and that's with the people I grew up with in good times and bad in Corpus Christi. I made many mistakes then and since then but that's life and I have learned so much from it.
I've had a wild ride since then and some moments (measured in days, months and years) have been very memorable and some devastating. Some moments I wished to have never experienced but it's those moments that has defined who I am today. Can not complain about where I'm at today with my career, I owe it to my training as a Combat Engineer in the US Army Corp of Engineers. Having spent time in places that today I'm most fortunate to have survived, it truly gave me the tools to continue in life over the last 40 years.
My career as a Licensed Land Surveyor in Texas and in California (since 1987) has given me the opportunity to be involved with many challenging and interesting projects, mostly major infrastructure, local, state and federal here in California. I'm currently the District Right of Way Surveyor in the Real Esate and Property Development Department at the San Franciscso Bay Area Rapid Transit District.
As some of you may know, my passion then and still is motorcycling. However over the past 25 years I raced bicycles (BMX and Mountain Biking) and have won national titles, been on a World Cup Team and even been on international podiums. Lot's of exciting races and can not tell you how wonderful it is to have the open spaces in my back yard to ride. Howevr, it came to a sudden halt in January of 2011 while training for the 2011 Master...Expand for more
s Mountain Bike Championships. While finishing up a ride one evening, lights on (it was dark but we ride out here often at night during the winter season) a cow stepped out of no where right in front of me while doing about 15 mph. Me and my bike went over the cow landing directly on my head. My helmet saved my life but I laided there realizing that I could not move, I was paralized. By myself and in an area at that time of night, there was no possibility of getting help. Fortunately after about 30 minutes laying there the feeling and movement came back, and I was able to sit up but not able to use my fingers to call for help, I was on my own. I was able to get myself up and assessed that I could ride my damaged bike back home. Long story short having a great nuerosurgeon, I'm now fused from C3 to C6.
I'ts been a long haul getting back in shape but can't tell you just how fortunate I am. With that said, I still enjoy my adventures in life and travel by motorcycle all over the country and most recently did something I've wanted to do for years, go for a run at Bonneville Salt Flats on my 30 year old Moto Guzzi LeMans, that's another story I'll share next year but what an experience.
I have a son, Justin (will be 23 this December) who will be a professional mountain biker on a national team next year. He attempted to be on the 2012 Olympic Team but had setbacks for a couple of years while racing. He's currently deep into the cyclocross season and will compete at the nationals in Oregon.
I'm really looking forward to getting back to Corpus Christi next year for the 40th reunion (let's make this a fun and memorable reunion).
Take care and see ya'll soon.
